Finding an affordable compact camera with vertical controls can be a bit of a pain for the portrait snapper on a budget. Thankfully, Pentax has come to the rescue with its newly-announced Optio VS20.

The 16MP digital compact comes packing an extra shutter release button and a second zoom lever for vertical position shooting – plus a vertical position tripod mount and an accelerometer to reorient the 3in display.

For getting up close and personal, the Optio VS20 sports a 20x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide angle coverage, covering all the bases.

The Optio VS20's gunning for casual snappers, with an Auto Picture mode to automatically select one of 15 shooting modes depending on conditions, while a Face Recall feature can remember pre-registered faces to make sure that your best buds are the centre of attention in group shots.

In-camera filters include Handheld Night Snap, Fish-eye and Sketch effects, while video filters that can be applied to the VS20's 720p footage include Fish-eye, Sketch and Miniature modes.

It's not exactly going to challenge the upcoming Canon 5D Mark III, but if you want an all-purpose snapper that won't break the bank, the Pentax Optio VS20 hits stores at the end of February, priced £200.
