Apple iPad outselling HP PCs

Apple's iPad outsold Hewlett-Packard's PCs in the final quarter of last year.

Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple, said the company had sold 15.43 million iPads in the final quarter of last year.

According to Gartner, HP sold 14.7 million PCs in the same period. Obviously, HP isn't the only computer manufacturer but the comparison shows how significant iPad sales have become.
Cook said: "There will come a day that the tablet market is larger than the PC market."
Cook also dismissed competitors such as Amazon's Kindle Fire and the Kindle e-reader. He said: "I think people really want to do multiple things with their tablets, so we don’t see these limited-function tablets and e-readers as being in the same category as iPad. We don’t think people who want an iPad will settle for a limited-function device."

Apple's set a new record for company profits, more than doubling quarterly profits to $13.1bn (£8.4bn) in the final quarter of last year. The news boosted shares in the company by more than six per cent, making Apple once again the most valuable company in the world by market cap.

The company said it had sold 37m iPhones in the last quarter and in 2011 as a whole it sold more iPhones than in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 combined.
According to research from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Apple's share of the US smartphone market doubled to 44.9 per cent in the final quarter of last year.
The company said that Apple was now growing at a faster rate than Android in Britain, Australia and the US. Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, said: "Overall, Apple sales are now growing at a faster rate than Android across the nine countries we cover."

Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple, said he was "thrilled" with the company's performance. "Apple's momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline," he said.
"Those numbers are just unimaginable. It's still an extremely well-managed company and they are showing that the product pipeline is sufficient even now to generate growth rates that are unrivaled." said Michael Obuchowski, chief investment officer at First Empire Asset Management.

Apple is rumoured to be planning a television set for 2012 but Cook did not offer any clues. He said: "Apple TV is doing extremely well; we just sold a record 1.4 million units. But we still classify this area as a hobby."
